On October 3, 1887, the city of Mankato purchased 120 acres to create Mankato's first park. Named after Henry Hastings Sibley the first Governor of Minnesota, who camped on the mound and later had a fur trading post north or the "mound" a large hill that has dominated this site.
George Ott's cabin was moved to Sibley Park in 1931. This cabin was originally built in 1857.
In December of 1887 land was added to the park with the purchase of the Southern Minnesota Stock and Fairground. This purchase also included an oval horse and bicycle racetrack, grandstand, and judging stand. By 1907 a bear cage and a small-scale zoo were established. A tragic flood in 1965 killed many of the zoo animals and left the Park unrecognizable. Today a small petting zoo, bandshell, ball diamonds, areas for picnics, and beautiful gardens can be enjoyed in the park.
Rensselaer D. Hubbard, a successful businessman of Mankato, built this house in 1871. A major addition was added in 1888. It has 18 rooms 4 baths. It has one of the first to have a telephone and electricity.
The Blue Earth County Historical Society purchased the home in 1938 and then deeded the property to the City of Mankato. The society used the house as its main museum from 1938 to 1988, exhibiting galleries, artifact storage, and a research center.
After a 20-year restoration project on the structure of the house brought the house back to its 1905 appearance, interpreting the life of the Hubbard family. Today this home is operated as a museum and is open to the public for a fee. The house contains about 25% of the original furniture.
